the start of something great (this is blog 1)

When this project was introduced, I had no idea what to do. I had passions and interests when I was younger, but as I grew older, and school became more of a full time job, I let those interest go. I sacrificed them, so that later in life after, when I finished school, I could pursue them. I was thinking what I could do that is both fun and beneficial for me. It also had to be something I could actually do and I could measure my progress. After much brainstorming and debate, I decided to start exercising again. It’s time to get swol.

I have been trying to start working out for a long time. In 7th grade, I started to work out like once or twice a week, and I liked it. I actually really liked. I tried to start working out again in 8th grade but I had to much work and not enough time. This problem stayed with me in 9th grade as well. But now, with the introduction of this project, I now have no excuse to not exercise.

I plan on going to the gym twice a week with my mom, probably on Tuesday and Thursday. I already have a membership, so that won’t really be a problem. I plan on modelling my fitness plan of off the fitnessgram program, the program that public schools use to test students grades 5-12’s athletic ability. This program focuses on upper body, lower body, and core.
  • Upper body:
    • weights
    • pushups
    • pull ups
  • Lower body:
    • treadmill
    • elliptical
    • jogging
  • Core:
    • trunk lifts
    • curl ups

All of these workouts can be completed at the gym, but a lot of them can be done at home. During the 5 days I’m not going to the gym, I plan on working out at home.
I have been able to run a mile in about 7 minutes comfortably, with my fastest recorded time being about 6:30. I think by the end of this project, I could easily run a 6-minute mile. The average mile times for 15-16-year-old boys is between 6 and 10 minutes, but I think running is one of my strengths, and I can become above average.

Pushups and upper body work outs in general have been my weaknesses. The average amount of pushups someone my age should be able to do is 26. I can barely do 27. I think with training; I can easily be able to do 30 to 35 pushups.

I have been underweight for most of my life. I am a good weight for my age, but because my height is above average, I am just underweight. Most people work out to lose weight, but I’m planning on gaining weight. If I could gain about 5 pounds, I would be back in the healthy BMI range. In order to achieve this, I am planning on working out, as well as eating healthy.

I am planning on eating more calories, and healthier items, like more proteins, fruits and vegetables. I am attempting to change my diet, my schedule, and body, in order to pursue the best me I can become.

I hope you join me on a quest for a better me.

  1. Love this idea.

Have you done/are you going to do any benchmarks throughout the weeks? It could help you/us track your progress throughout the project, and possibly provide even more motivation for you to improve yourself. Also, you talked about the excercises you'll be doing, but only mentioned the diet part once; do you have anything specific in mind?

Also, If you're looking for someone to excise with you, or motivate you (scream at you) while you work out, I'd be willing to give it a try :)

  2. Your idea and rationale is great! Everyone should strive for a healthier life and now with the time on your hands it is the right time to get healthy! You briefly mentioned the different kinds of activities that you will be doing (push-ups, pull-ups, treadmill, ect.) but what will you do to train your body to be able to do those activities at a higher level.

A suggestion that I need to stress because of my many seasons of training is make sure to constantly train! Do not give yourself reasons to take a day off, it will derail your entire training process.

Have fun with this type of project and much like Davis, if you want a motivation/training partner, I would be willing to try!

  3. I think it's cool how you are targeting multiple aspects of a healthy lifestyle - not just exercise or diet alone. It also might be a good idea to figure out a "fitness plan" maybe something like everyone had to do in 9th grade wellness. It could give you an idea of when and how much to increase the severity of your exercises. Do you know what type of expert or who your expert will be yet? Overall I think this is a cool idea and I hope you have fun with it!

  4. This seems like it will very interesting to follow. So I realize your modeling your exercise on the fitness gram, but I was wondering how you will figure out each individual workout. Like how will you choose, the routine for each day and how many reps you will doo, etc.?
