i rant about fitness and then talk about this guy from the internet (this is blog 4)

So we are halfway through this project. I have been going to the gym for over 3 weeks now, and I feel healthier. No, I haven’t gotten “swol” like I said that I would in my first blog. But that’s ok. In an effort to try and better my workout, I started researching some other people’s routines, so I could incorporate some techniques into my own. What I found was suppressing. I read several articles, and even some research about how fitness is extremely individual. Fitness is not something uniform. Its not like "If you have a 6 pack and can do 50 pushups, you’re fit." It’s not like that at all. Fitness is something that you set yourself. Its a goal. You don’t have to be a muscle head to be fit.  And exercise and healthy eating are not the only aspects of fitness. From my research, I found that fitness is more of a lifestyle then a routine. I am finding that you can’t just put in the time and come out of the gym with a cookie cutter “fit” body. People go to the gym because they like to. They go to the gym to better themselves. I can find all walks of life in the gym, but all of these people can bond over the one element of their life that is fitness. (I know this seems very Utopian and all hippie like, but I feel very preachy right now) As long as someone is actively trying to improve themselves, they are becoming fit.

sorry for the poor quality, my mom isn't a camera expert

Well now that I said all of that… I started working on my vlog. I have been collecting b-roll for a little bit now, and I’m happy to say I think it will be pretty good. (I’m probably being delusional but I guess we'll see.) On top of my research about fitness, I have also been researching the art of vloging. I’ve never really done a vlog myself, and I feel that just talking into a camera can be a little awkward, but I found this one guy (I wouldn’t say found, I already knew about him, I just never looked into him) named Casey Neistat. Casey is one of the most famous and successful vloggers on the internet, with about 6.6 million (myself included) YouTube subscribers.

Casey has a really interesting way of vlogging. He used multiple camera angles and unique camera shots to put together a video that feels more like a conversation or a story then a vlog.

I already have some of my own shots that I hope to edit together to create a little something like Casey’s work. There far from perfect, but with a little editing (I knew taking TV 1 wouldn’t be a waste!) and a lot of love, it might not be a complete disaster

(update - the first 16 seconds look pretty good!)
(update 2 - because I am having some trouble coming up with new titles,  I'm just going to make a really bad one sentence summary and have that be my title ok?)
(update 3 - I swear this is the last one. I edited some more of my vlog and I noticed that i look really weird when I am working out. I hope that wont be a problem. Maybe its because I am super focused!)

  1. This blog as quite something, wasn't it! I really like the concept of individualized fitness. I kind of disagree that there isn't a single, unitary goal that everyone aims towards. I feel like just because my idea of fitness is being able to do 10 push ups a week doesn't mean that I don't need to do more than that! Aside from that, I think that blog is great!

  2. I have been a HUGE Casey supporter for over a year or so now...really bummed he stopped daily vlogging but some of his new videos are pretty amazing (I love his running video and the one "Do what you can't"). I always feel inspired when I watch him and I'm glad he is influencing your project! What editing program are you using? I'm familiar with iMovie and Final Cut Pro X (You can get a trial with this and it is a great system) if either is what you are using and need any help! Good luck!

  3. The "do what you can't" is probably one of my favorite videos of his. I have been using adobe premier pro for about a year and I feel pretty comfortable with it.

  4. I think you can really do a lot with your vlog! There are legitimately a massive amount of workout videos and vlogs on YouTube. I'm sure you could use some of them as "models" or "guidelines" as to how you should go about your vlog. Casey was always a favorite of mine, and his vlog undoubtedly attracted a large following. But is that really the style of vlogging that you should be going for? Anyway, I digress. In terms of your workout routines, what exactly are you doing in particular? I'm kind of lost when it comes to what parts of the body you're focusing on and how you are specifically working them out. I try to visit the gym as often as I can, so I definitely share an interest when it comes to this kind of stuff. I do love what you're doing here, and I think your vlog could potentially be a very motivational push for a lot of people. Keep doing what you're doing man!

  5. Hi Ethan,

I think your research is really interesting and something that defies the norm of modern society. In today's world, looks are everything. When people think of "fit," they think of a good body and not necessarily a great workout routine. Like you said, this isn't really the case. Becoming "fit" can just mean having a consistent schedule. I think if you don't have an idea for the TED talk already, you can talk about the different perspectives of a "perfect" fitness program.
